March of the Origami Penguin

The documentary, March of the Penguins, and movie, Happy Feet, have boosted the popularity of penguins in the last few years. Not that the penguins weren't already cute before!

This origami penguin is beautiful and has a "crisp" look if you crease the folds well. It even looks like it's marching.

Beautiful Origami Lotus

Origami flowers are very popular and we've added another one to our site. This time, it's an origami lotus or origami water lily.

It's not hard to make this origami lotus but it may be easier if you start off with a larger sheet of paper. This origami consists of making the same fold several times, and each time the paper gets smaller and smaller.

We only had 6" square paper so that's what we used. But if you have an 8" square origami paper, use that! It'll be easier on your fingers.

Here are the instructions on making the origami lotus:

Po, the Kung Fu Origami Panda

We've uploaded an origami panda to the site. Kids are sure to love this one, especially if they've seen Kung Fu Panda, an excellent animated movie.

Po, an overweight and clumsy panda, works in his father's (who is a goose, by the way)noodle shop but dreams of being a kung fu master.

The movie follows his journey as he stumbles his way into the kungfu world.

There are some really hilarious scenes and Jack Black was perfectly casted as the voice of Po. I loved this movie - the story, the message and the laugh out moments.

Do try folding it and send your photo to us when you're done! We'd love to see it and I'm sure all the readers would love to see it too.

Origami Gun

I don't remember who taught me how to make origami gun. But I do remember playing with my cousins with paper guns in our hands, all of us screaming "Bang! Bang!"

We would fold the origami gun then run outside and be cowboys! I guess all kids want to be a cowboy at some point. Ah, the joys of being a kid!

Made Origami Samurai Helmet

Had lots of fun making this origami samurai helmet. Too bad the origami paper was too small or I could have worn this helmet. If you use a larger piece of paper to start like a newspaper, a kid or an adult could wear this functional origami.

Origami Cranes for World Peace

There is a Japanese saying that whoever folds 1000 origami cranes gets a wish.

A young Japanese girl named Sadako Sasaki was 2 years old when the atomic bomb was dropped about 1 mile away from her home in Hiroshima. She was diagnosed with leukemia and was inspired by the Japanese sayingShe started folding cranes to wish for world peace.

Now 3rd grade students a Moses DeWitt have been folding the origami cranes to wish for world peace.

The 1000 cranes will be sent to Mayor of Hiroshima, Tadatoshi Akiba. Children from all over the world have sent paper cranes in hopes for peace.

The cranes are placed at the foot of a statue Sasaki's statue. A plaque at the foot of the statue reads, “This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world.”

I found a picture of Sasaki on Flickr. Credit of picture belongs to Lisa Norwood.
